Happy Spring! After a difficult past year, a recent U.S. Department of Labor survey reports that job openings have hit a two-year high. We dive into how President Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure plan could play a major role in workforce development training to fill those vacancies and how coding bootcamps may fit into that plan. There were a few multi-million dollar fundraises announced in April, and more diversity in tech initiatives, including apprenticeships with stipends. Plus, find out which 10 new bootcamps we added to the Course Report directory this month!

$74 MILLION IN FUNDRAISES

• TechCrunch reports that Holberton School announced a $20M fundraise. Holberton expects a rise in student enrollment, and they will expand their network with new schools in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Africa.
• According to FinSMEs, Udemy announced that it had closed a Series F round and raised $50 million at the end of 2020. 
• A software apprenticeship called Formation has raised $4 million, as reported by TechCrunch.

TACKLING UNEMPLOYMENT WITH CODING BOOTCAMPS

• According to the U.S. Labor Department’s monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), U.S job openings have hit a two-year high. 
• The New York Times covered how people can upskill without paying until they land a job by highlighting a growing interest in Social Finance, a non-profit that facilitates ISAs. 
• Forbes spoke with Flatiron School CEO Adam Enbar about how artists can thrive in tech. 
• HR Dive dug into how COVID-19 has impacted internship programs in the US.
• The Philadelphia Inquirer spotlit Urban Technology Project (UTP), a tech apprenticeship program with a stipend that is helping high school graduates land tech roles in IT.
• WCNC reports that The City of Charlotte used CARES Act funding to send 11 people who were laid off due to the pandemic to Tech Elevator for free.
• ABC News also covered Tech Elevator as an answer to the demand for technical talent in California.
• Simplilearn has partnered with IBM to help them upskill 20,000 professionals this year. 
• SC Magazine highlighted how Fullstack Academy is offering free cyber bootcamp scholarships to NYC residents who make an annual salary of $50,000 or less and were demonstrably impacted by COVID-19.
• The State covered the South Carolina workforce development program, Create Opportunity Columbia, which offers students a six-month, tuition-free software engineering certification class at Midlands Tech and then a two-year paid apprenticeship with local companies. (The next cohort begins May 17th!)
• According to Geekwire, Amazon is expanding the Amazon Technical Academy to students outside Amazon by partnering with Kenzie Academy and Lambda School.

DIVERSITY IN TECH: NEW SCHOLARSHIPS + STATS

• A new Pew Research study shows the higher education pipeline has a long path ahead of it for increasing diversity, especially in fields like computing and engineering.
• BuiltIn chimed in about the state of women in tech today and the areas that need improvement.
• Flatiron School is relaunching the John Stanley Ford Fellowship, a program that supports the advancement of Black tech professionals by offering four-month-long apprenticeships that provide on-the-job training, ongoing mentorship, and access and opportunities to the tech community.
• According to Commercial Appeal, CodeCrew and The Collective Blueprint landed $3 million from the NBA Foundation to boost their efforts in helping underserved youth land tech jobs. 
• Prolific North reports that HOST is partnering with Niyo Enterprise to empower black women into tech careers through the coding bootcamp Black Codher.
• Code Fellows announced that they’ll be partnering with MentorWorks to offer a new ISA.

4 NEW BOOTCAMP + UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS

• Fullstack Academy has partnered with Emory to offer cybersecurity and coding bootcamps in Atlanta. 
• Fullstack Academy announced that it’s now offering a data analytics bootcamp. 
• Kenzie Academy and Southern New Hampshire University launched a software engineering bootcamp that is based on the curriculum from Amazon’s Technical Academy. 
• CyberNB has partnered with Lighthouse Labs to offer an online cyber bootcamp, which will match graduates with employers from across the country. 
• Through their free data analytics bootcamp Data Science For All, Correlation One has partnered with Miami-Dade College and SoftBank to help reach the goal of training at least underrepresented 10,000 people over the next three years.
