Happy 2024! The demand for “New Collar” workers and skills-based hiring was a key takeaway from the news in January. Alongside the call for increased skills-based hiring, there were five programs conscientiously launching tech skills training this month that are either reduced tuition or totally free to students. 50% YoY GROWTH + 1 LARGE ACQUISITION ON THE TABLE

  • Online bootcamp Simplilearn (which acquired Fullstack Academy in late 2022) reported it saw 50% YoY revenue growth in 2023.
  • Upgrad is in talks to finalize the acquisition of Udacity for $100 million. 
  • According to BNN, Northcoders, which receives funding from the UK’s Department of Education, reported a 250% surge in course registrations since the start of the year.
  • Northcoders also appointed Steven Oakes to its strategic board.
  • Tech Elevator CEO Anthony Hughes stepped down this month. 

UPSKILLING TO INCLUDE AI LITERACY

  • A new bill, the AI Literacy Act, that would fund AI literacy training for children and adults, was introduced in Congress. 
  • In HR Brew, Christopher Duchesne (general manager at Springboard) weighed in how AI will impact L&D in 2024: “It’s more about how folks are leveraging AI and are being upskilled through the learning and talent development programs to actually be able to apply it in their job to be more effective, to be more productive and more efficient in what they’re doing.”
  • Wondering what a career in AI looks like? We rounded up 10 AI jobs (and salaries!), plus on-the-ground career insights from bootcamp graduates now working in AI roles. 

SKILLS-BASED HIRING + MENTORSHIP

  • Boston Consulting Group (BCG) released a report on the rise of skills-based hiring across the globe. The report shows that skills-based hires get promoted at the same rate as their peers and tend to stay longer at organizations.  
  • According to HR Dive, the mayor of Philadelphia announced that the city was dropping degree requirements for some of its city jobs. 
  • The increased demand for “New Collar” workers — skilled workers who may not have a degree — was covered by the New York Times and CNBC.
  • A recent survey from Express Employment Professionals shows that mentorship programs and upskilling opportunities are ways to counter tech talent drain in a company.
  • Multiverse has partnered with Northeastern University to offer a degree pathway for US apprentices at Multiverse. The work that is completed during the Multiverse apprenticeship will be recognized with credits towards a bachelor's degree at Northeastern University.
  • HCAmag covered how Canadian cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver are quickly becoming cost-effective tech hubs but how attracting and retaining tech talent needs to be prioritized. 

MAKING TECH TRAINING AFFORDABLE IN 2024

  • Tech Elevator has partnered with the nonprofit, Tech Impact to offer its full-time coding bootcamp for free to residents of Delaware. 
  • According to Inside Higher Ed, Idaho has released a workforce development scholarship that covers 80% of tuition fees (up to $8K) for education and training programs for in-demand jobs, such as software developer and quality assurance testers. 
  • The Canadian charity, Momentum Calgary, announced a new Income Share Agreement (ISA) plan for its students. 
  • Byron O’Connor wrote an op-ed in Big Issue on the positive effect graduating from non-profit bootcamp, Generation (now ChooseU) had on his life. 
  • ITWorks unrolled its new, free upskilling courses for its bootcamp graduates. 

DIVERSIFYING THE TECH PIPELINE

  • Groupon announced that they are offering a $350,000 educational fund dedicated to enhancing STEM education for Black students and awarding scholarships to Black students pursuing advanced degrees in STEM fields.

1 NEW BOOTCAMP + 1 NEW COURSE

  • According to Tulsa World, bootcamp that was formerly Holberton School in Tulsa, Oklahoma has gone independent and become Atlas School
  • Nucamp has released a new cybersecurity bootcamp with cohorts starting in February 2024.
