This May, training programs and nonprofits helping women, people of color, low-wage workers, and nonbinary folks make career changes into tech received extra support from investors, philanthropists, and regional government organizations. Numerous grants are now available to Canadians looking to gain technical skills, and a cybersecurity bootcamp announced it is now offering college credit. $17M IN BOOTCAMP FUNDRAISES + 1 BOOTCAMP ACQUISITION

• Merit America received a $15.6M grant to help lower-income workers in the Bay Area gain access to technical skills training and career coaching. 
• Technical.ly reports that Resilient Coders in Philadelphia received a $2.5M donation from Mackenzie Scott. 
• Talent management company PowerToFly acquired Skillcrush this month. 
• Chegg named Nathan Schultz as its new CEO. 
• Kentucky-based Awesome Inc U announced its 17th cohort and is celebrating helping 175 students employed in tech. 
• According to Fast Company, Launch Academy has paused its coding bootcamp program. 
• FE News reports that 2U is winding down its UK-based university bootcamp programs.

EARNING COLLEGE CREDIT AT A CYBERSECURITY BOOTCAMP

• Level Effect announced that graduates of their Cyber Defence Analyst Program may be eligible for 59 credits towards a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity degree at Purdue University Global.
• The National Cyber Director is imploring companies for more training and skills-based hiring to fill the more than 500,000 cybersecurity job openings in the U.S.
• A recent report from Pluralsight shows significant tech skills gaps in cybersecurity and cloud engineering across organizations worldwide. The report recommends upskilling current employees as a way to fill those knowledge gaps and save money.

3 CANADIAN WORKFORCE TRAINING INITIATIVES

• Palette Skills is partnering with six British Columbia businesses to deliver upskilling. Technical training will be delivered by programs such as Lighthouse Labs. 
• Canadian Marketing Association announced a new scholarship for digital marketers that is run through Jelly Academy and funded by Upskill Canada and Palette Skills. 
• BrainStation is currently accepting applications for its Code to Career cohorts, which are subsidized by Upskill Canada.  

THE LATEST DIVERSITY IN TECH NEWS

• The New York Times reported on a new program, Break Through Tech A.I. aimed at lower-income, Latina and Black women. The course was developed by Cornell Tech and includes career coaching. 
• CBS News interviewed Brigette Wallace, the founder of G(Code), on how the program has helped 300 Black, Brown, and Indigenous women and non-binary people gain the technical skills they need to start technical careers or move into more intensive training. 
• In a New York Times article, the nonprofit tech training program, Pursuit shares how it is in discussions with the NY Department of Labor and NY Department of Education to certify it as an apprenticeship.

3 NEW TECHNICAL SKILLS BOOTCAMPS

• According to Government Technology, NukuDo has launched an in-person cybersecurity school in San Antonio, Texas. 
• CornwallLive reports that Headforwards Digital Academy has opened. The UK bootcamp is in partnership with Code Institute.
• WeThinkCode in South Africa has opened and is now accepting applications for upcoming cohorts.

OUR FAVORITE PIECES ON THE BLOG

We caught up with Asheville-based musician and Coding Temple graduate Lee about how he made a career change into software development earlier this year. Lee leaned on networking to help him land his first developer role, and says, “What worked for my job search was reaching out to real people and building connections that way. You don't ask them for a job, you just ask to talk to them. It’s easy to ask ten people to meet for an informational interview, something I learned from my career coach!”
